Photo overload, December 15, 2012, Part One.

I'd like to start by apologizing for my lengthy hiatus. Various things happened, the least interesting of which being that I moved from Camp Lejeune to Portsmouth, VA, so I'm living in Hampton Roads again. I also got yet another new camera, a Nikon D3000 dSLR, thanks to a Black Friday sale. To break it in, I met back up with Mr. Flashing Lights and we took a lengthy trip around Hampton Roads and some of the countryside around the US 58 corridor. Needless to say, I took a lot of photos. . .518, to be exact.

We began our trip in Suffolk, on Main Street, otherwise known as US 460 Business.

Typical Virginia unisign. We will see a lot of these.

The level of mediocrity varies.

Downtown Suffolk.

One foot, two foot.

Compared to some of the stuff we'll see later, this signage isn't half bad.

Blurry VA 337 shield.

Decent unisignage, although they should have "BUSINESS" somewhere on there.

1990s-era Nissan Sentra. Also, a look back at VA 337 eastbound.

More shield weirdness.

This one gets it right, bucking the Hampton Roads stereotype that you can have decent-looking, or correct, but not both at the same time.

This fleet fuel station still rocks old-school BP livery.

Back to mainline 58.

We'll be headed toward Holland.

It's not long before 58 enters the middle of nowhere again.

These curve signs with integrated advisory speeds are becoming more common.

Within one-half mile of Holland's version of 58 Business.

At the split. Keep left to go on to Emporia, and eventually Interstate 95.

Another split. VA 189 splits off from 58 Business.

VA 189 Business? The blurriness is an unfortunate side effect of roads that are old enough to begin collecting Social Security benefits, in a car nearly old enough to drink.

It's not long before VA 189 finds its way back to 58, spending a few miles together on a road surface that is much more forgiving to both photography and lower backs.

Picture in picture. Actually, it's a video, but this is the first time I've been able to pull off a shot like this.

We'll run into VA 272 again soon.

VA 189 split/US 258 (Truck) countdown.

Trucks should follow the truck route.

The exit.

If you like the smell of new money, turn right at the end of the ramp. I don't really have an excuse as to why these are so blurry.

VA 189 doesn't actually end here, but this post will. Stay tuned.
